Video to Frames

Turn a video into still images: pick how often, pick the format, download every frame in one archive. The file never leaves your machine.

Your file is read and re-encoded by your own browser. No request carries it anywhere — this page has no upload endpoint to send it to.

These tools do one step by hand. Life2Film, our iPhone app, cuts your whole camera roll into a film on its own, on the device. Get Life2Film for iPhone

Questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The browser decodes it and draws each frame onto a canvas, and the images are written on your machine. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How many frames can I take?

Up to 600 per run. They are held in the tab until the archive is written, and six hundred full-HD JPEGs is already around 150 MB. If the interval you pick would give more, it is widened to fit and the page says so, rather than quietly stopping halfway through the video.

JPG or PNG?

JPG for almost everything: a tenth of the size and no visible difference on video frames, which were lossy to begin with. PNG when the frame is going into further editing and you want no second round of compression.

Are the frames exact?

Each one is the frame the browser shows at that instant, at the video's own resolution unless you choose a smaller size. File names carry the time in seconds, so you can find any frame again in the video.
