GoPro Quik alternatives for iPhone: what each one actually does
Quik does one thing well: give it clips, get a cut with music. The reason people look for an alternative is rarely the output. It is that Quik is built for GoPro owners, the useful parts sit behind a subscription priced for them, and phone footage is a guest there. Check the current price on GoPro’s site; it changes, and the free tier shrinks with it.
Below are the alternatives that do the same job for footage shot on an iPhone, and what each one leaves out. Anything that calls itself an editor and expects you to drag clips around a timeline is not on the list; that is a different job.
Photos Memories (free, already on the phone)
Open an album, tap More, choose Play Memory Movie. Photos picks the clips, adds a soundtrack and renders a vertical movie. You can change the mix, the length (short, medium, long) and which photos are included, and with Apple Music you can choose almost any song.
What it gives up: you cannot say what the film is about, cuts are not placed on the beat, and the output is one shape. There is a longer walkthrough in our Memories post.
Google Photos highlight video (free, needs backup)
Create, Highlight video, pick who or when, save. The editor lets you swap the music and reorder or remove clips, and the late-2025 templates add beat-synced cuts with built-in music.
What it gives up: the clips must be backed up first and the render happens on Google’s servers, so it needs a connection and your footage goes through Google. No length control. Details here.
CapCut Auto Cut (free tier, exports with conditions)
CapCut’s Auto Cut with Beat Sync takes a set of clips and a track, detects the beats, and places the cuts on them. It is the closest thing to Quik’s core trick, and the beat detection is real: it puts markers on the waveform and snaps edits to them.
What it gives up: the automatic result is a starting point for CapCut’s timeline, which is the editor you may have been trying to avoid. Some templates and features process on their servers, and free exports have carried a closing card at various points. Read the current terms before relying on it for anything you would not want uploaded.
Life2Film (free montage, on-device)
Declaring the interest: this is ours. Spin a calendar to a day, a trip or a month, say what you want in plain words, pick music, and it cuts on the beat. If the first cut misses, ask for shorter or a different mood and it re-cuts in seconds. Scene detection, quality scoring and beat analysis run on the iPhone, so nothing is uploaded and there is no account. It also imports from a DJI Osmo Pocket directly, which is the camera people who left GoPro tend to have.
What it gives up: it is iPhone (and a Mac beta), not Android, and it has no template library. Montage is free; the paid part is a chat director that edits by conversation. App Store.
Which one
- Footage is already in Google Photos and you do not mind the upload: Google.
- You want zero setup and a decent result now: Photos Memories.
- You want the cuts on the beat and are willing to finish in a timeline: CapCut.
- You want to say what the film is about and keep the footage on the phone: Life2Film.
Quik itself remains the right answer for one group: people with a GoPro who want the camera’s own stabilisation and highlight tags to carry into the edit. If that is you, the subscription is buying something the others do not have.
